Prince Alfred Pass

Sunday, December 11th, 2011

The pass is a hidden place, from whichever side you approach it. It is, however, the chain that links the two worlds of the Garden Route and the Langkloof.

Dalene Matthee, author of ‘ Fiela’s Child’ and a number of other books, made the connection.

It is a long dusty pass, joining two places, distinctly different from each other.

The Garden Route is the blue and green Garden world, of sea and dense forest. The Langkloof is exactly what it says it is, a long, long valley between two mountain ranges, the Tsitsikamma and the Kouga, backed by the Baviaanskloof.  It is a valley of farms, orchards and little towns, dry in the summer, and hot.

The great Thomas Bains was the builder of the pass, as he was of most of the awe inspiring passes along our coastline. He packed up his wife and many children and settled down at De Vlugt, while the building was done.

De Vlugt is now a welcome oasis mid pass, where dusty travellers can find refreshment under a cool tree, with tea and cake from a small friendly store. The pause is welcome, because the sun beats down in the summer, and from the Kloof side where  the road starts at Avontuur, it is dusty, and  in many parts not for the faint hearted. It clings to cliff sides and claws its way up and down, giving way to breath taking  views.

Toward the sea side the road begins its descent and burrows its way through forest giants and ferns. The cool breeze is felt and the pass resorts to a sedate meander through greenness, to spit you out eventually, with the smell of sea, close by.

Chef Alma @ Groenvlei

Monday, April 11th, 2011

A very pleasant location to visit is Chef Alma @ Groenvlei where one can enjoy a cup of coffee in peace , sitting  on the deck looking out over neatly cut lawns to the  reed edged lake beyond.     I enjoyed   an excellent brunch  of scrambled eggs on a toasted roll with  smokey bacon, cheese and tomatoe/onion salza , a little pricey at R45  but  worth it.  The coffee  brand is Lavazza which  I have always enjoyed, hot and strong.
The main course menu looks interestisng  as do the desserts and prices are reasonable .   Chef Alma makes the most beautifully decorated Cupcakes -  for anyone looking for something special for an occasion this is the place to  go.  Also offered is a Curry Buffet on Wednesday evenings, High Tea on  Sunday afternoons, both need to be booked  AND  listen, Pensioners 10% discount on Tuesdays.

Try it out, you won’t regret it

Thanda Cafe

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010
I took the boys out to Birds of Eden yesterday and decided to try the restaurant which changed hands a few months ago.  We do the walk through regularly but after a few bad experiences haven’t bothered to go back to the Cafe. I enjoyed the kebab I ordered. Even though it was a bit on the tough side, the Portugese touch, with chorizo sausage, green pepper, onion and some homemade chilli, worked well. Its a nice spot to unwind and hope it does well.  534-8260

Jades Cafe at the Heath

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010
We generally do Sunday lunch at the Heath. Warren does a roast lamb which he serves with mashed potatoe, ratatouille, roasted pumpkin and sweet potatoe. The service is a bit haphazard but the meal is consistently good and we go back again and again. The kids have plenty of space to run around in, nice people, nice vibe, it’s relaxed. Eagle Encounters, a rehabilitation, education and eco-tourism centre for birds of prey offer regular displays and the knick knack shop is also different to most. It’s interesting, as is the nursery which has slowly evolved and which offers a good selection of both local indigenous and exotic plants.

Sunday Drive

Friday, June 25th, 2010

We drove out to Cafe Francois for Sunday Lunch to find that Ryan had just finished a manic breakfast session and that he hadn’t even started thinking about lunch. So we moved on to Timberlake and sat down to the newly opened Cafe Afrique which was only due to open offically in a couple of days time. And since we were on a roll we did the breakfast at lunch, coffee and let the kids run. But it was the biscuits and the very obvious enthusiasm which left a lasting impression. One that will take us back for a Sunday lunch.
